Her eyes were brown, as if she matched them with the color of the furniture. As their eyes met, she closed her book without turning towards them. It made them feel uneasy as they could see the malice and hatred in her eyes. She slowly turned around, facing them, then she stood up and walked towards the other door. With a gesture of her hand, she asked them to go inside, as if she was waiting for them.

“When I inherited the Flame of the First Dawn. I was alone. In the circle of fire.” She led them to the ceremonial chamber, where glowing glyphs danced across the stones. “I saw a rift open in the flame. A figure stepped through. Red eyes. Long limbs. Not beast. Not man. It smiled. And it spoke.” “What did it say?” Gunner asked. Nalia’s voice dropped. “‘The light always burns brightest before the end.’ And then it was gone.” ****** By the end of the day, Cheyenne sat at her kitchen table again, fingers pressed to her temples. Gunner passed her a drink and sat beside her.

She took the book from the table and placed it in between us, took both of the bird eyes and put one on each of my palm. " What are these?" I was just being curious. " A vulture's eyes", she snapped and continued rummaging through the pages of the book. The eyes were still moist, as if it was just cut out from the poor vulture. She took few drops of each of the liquid and rubbed on her palm. " I need your memories of her to determine where she is", she closed my palm in with the eyes, " so I need you to think about her, create her picture in your mind", I nodded.

Morwenna Blood still burned behind my eyes from the last vision, a lingering ache like embers pressed into the sockets. I hadn’t slept in two nights, not without the Bone Seer’s shadow slipping in to poison my dreams. Tonight, I refused to close my eyes. Tonight, I would meet her on my terms.

I pull out one of the novels. “Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough,” he said immediately, without even glancing at it. He could tell which of the books were missing by just looking at the rest on the rack. “You read it?” There's suspicion in his tone.

She looks down at my hand before her eyes meet mine once again. For a second, I can’t bring myself to think I’m looking into the eyes of a monster. Her eyes sparkle, revealing the slightest hints of green amongst the hazel. Her eyes soften, before they flicker black, and her expression darkens, a small frown etching across her forehead.

Bullets chased after my heels like a storm. I pulled the trigger without hesitation. The explosion swallowed half the desert. Fire erupted into the night as the shockwave hurled me through the air. I crashed into the sand, drowning in blood while flames flickered at the edges of my vision. Slowly, I reached up and tore the Heart of Protection necklace from my throat. Then I threw it into the fire. Before consciousness slipped away completely, I saw helicopters descending from the sky, each one marked with my family's crest. Through my fading vision, men in black suits poured from the cabins and dropped to one knee in the sand in perfect unison.
