I quickly averted my eyes and looked out the window. The plane was slowly making its ascent, and the cityscape was soon replaced with endless stretches of clouds. Eventually, we landed in a barren area. … At the same time, Zachary carefully carried a cake into the hospital ward. "Darling, I bought you your favorite—" His voice came to a grinding halt, and the cake fell to the floor. The carefully piped frosting turned into a pile of mush. With eyes rapidly turning red, Zachary grabbed the collar of the nearest bodyguard and snarled, "Where's Claire?"

So, I drove around for a bit before finding a five-star hotel, and checking in. I quickly paid for the room, took the key and rushed inside. The moment the door was shut behind me, I looked around for a bit, in case there were any hidden cameras around. The possibility was small, but it was never zero. I needed to be sure that for the next seven days, I did not stand out enough. After I was sure that there were no cameras around, I closed the curtains shut before dropping my bag and suitcases on the bed. "Okay Kara," I whispered as I took a deep breath, “Let’s see what you can do.”

I asked. There it was…the shift. Subtle. Satisfied. “The Seal,” he said. My fingers stilled completely. “The Seal of the Seven,” he clarified. “And the clause attached to it.” Silence stretched between us. Heavy. Measured. Deliberate. He knew what he was asking for. He knew exactly what it meant. “You’re reaching above your station,” I said. “And you’re running out of time,” he replied smoothly. A faint sound crackled through the line then. Soft. Barely there. But I heard it. A breath. A shift. A presence. Proof. My jaw tightened.
