"Or maybe we'll stumble upon a magical oasis," I said, trying to inject some humor into my voice. It fell flat in the dusty air, but Ben gave me a small smile anyway, the kind that made the corners of his eyes crinkle.
"Hey, you're the one who believes in miracles, not me." he replied, nudging my shoulder with his.
I snorted, adjusting the pack on my shoulders. "I don't believe in miracles anymore, Ben. I believe in stubbornly refusing to die. There's a difference."
