Today was Valentine's Day, and I wanted my husband to take a day off. "Stay home with me," I said. "Valentine's Day is the best time to make money," he replied, turning away. As he stepped out the door, he casually reminded me, "Call me if anything happens." I had planned to wait for him to come back, but at some point, I drifted off to sleep. When I woke, it wasn't to the sound of him returning—it was the pain that pulled me out of my daze. Cold sweat soaked my face as I gasped for air.

*Xanvier's pov* I smiled like a school boy as I held the candles as though they were candies. Few nights ago at Mexico, I planned something similar, but Sandra stayed up late at work. Tonight, it's going to as planned, I feel it already. "One, two, three..." I counted as I placed candle on each stair. I continued like that until I reached the bedroom. I hurriedly downstairs to lit it and back inside the room to make the bed. I was super excited. I checked my drawer for the pack of condoms I bought earlier, took it out and placed it on th the bed for easy access.

“That’s right, Claire. Ethan still cares about you. Just earlier, he was talking about surprising you for Valentine’s Day.” She turned to him, but her words were meant for me. “We’re all adults here. A little fun isn’t a big deal, right? Don’t take it to heart…” As she spoke, she picked up a bottle and aimed it at the scattered condoms on the floor. “Have you ever played with water balloons? They’re soft and feel just right against your skin. You should try it.” The still-warm latex pressed against my arm. My stomach lurched violently. The nausea surged up my throat, and I couldn’t hold it back—I vomited.

But his voice, cold and arrogant, shattered it. "Where are you? Lucy needs a necklace for a banquet. I remember you wore that custom Valentine's piece today. Bring it over quickly." A bitter laugh echoed in my chest, mingling with despair. He killed our child for Lucy Wicker, and now he wanted to take my Valentine's necklace and give it to her? "Do you even remember leaving me alone at the bridal studio?" I asked. Caught off guard, Mike paused for a moment before replying curtly, "Are you seriously holding a grudge over that? Wedding photos can be taken any time. Why are you being so petty?"

The man was a billionaire and could pay for anything he wanted as long as he could get it. I moved close to the books and tried reading some of their titles. They were mostly novels, and a little gasp fled my lips when I saw my favorite dark romance series, sitting on the shelf. The Ryan Rule by Sadie Kincaid. I loved the four books of that series so much, and although I’ve read them all, I wouldn’t mind re-reading them again. I didn’t have the money to purchase the books so I borrowed from a schoolmate. But now they were here.

Inside was a vintage edition of my favorite book—Pride and Prejudice, a beautiful leather-bound copy that must have cost him a fortune. "Alex," I breathed, running my fingers over the embossed cover. "This is too much." "It's your birthday," he said simply. "And you're my best friend. Nothing is too much." He hugged me goodnight, and I stood in my doorway watching him walk away, holding my book and my flowers, feeling more cared for than I had in months. Miles didn't call until the next morning. By then, Valeria's "panic attack" had mysteriously resolved itself.

RUBBY'S POV For a moment, all that existed was him, his touch made me feel like I was something precious. After what felt like an eternity, we finally pulled apart both of us breathless. Alex licked his lips as though the remnant of my lips was still there. I rested my forehead against him, with my eyes still closed. "Happy birthday," he murmured. I smiled and rested my fingers lightly against his chest. Maybe I wasn't ready to say yes to being his Valentine, but I also knew I wasn't ready to let him go either.
