22 Rosie Valentine’s Day sneaked up on me before I even realized what date it was and suddenly the café was decorated with cheap pink streamers and plastic hearts hanging from the ceiling, full of couples whispering across tables and holding hands and looking at each other like they were the only two people in the world.

With gestures, not words. I sat on the bed slowly and unwrapped it. A new book. “You look so beautiful… it hurts.” I froze. “Valentino—” “My twin always gets the best things,” he said softly. There was something in his voice—resentment, longing, sadness? I couldn’t tell. He reached into his coat and pulled out a small, wrapped object. “Here.” I unwrapped it carefully. It was a worn book—brown leather cover, soft and creased like it had lived through storms. A lily carved in the center. I gasped. “Valentino…”

He smoothly drew her focus back to the gift I had given her the large beautifully wrapped book. Beth's eyes lit up, the earlier sadness completely forgotten. "Oh my goodness!" she squealed, her small hands reverently caressing the cover. "A first edition of 'Voyage to the Stars'! You know how much I love sci-fi, Sage! I've been trying to get this particular book for so long! This is why I feel more excited than ever!" Her enthusiasm was infectious and I found myself smiling genuinely, relieved to have brought such joy to the little girl.

I scanned the shelves, my eyes tracing the titles and covers in search of the perfect book to momentarily distract me from the reality of my mother's illness. A vibrant book cover caught my attention, a beautiful couple locked in a passionate embrace against a backdrop of rolling hills and a setting sun.
