He had not eaten in days. The cold had bitten his fingers. The bond-sickness had hollowed his cheeks until he resembled a skull wrapped in greying skin. "Alpha," my Beta said, eyes downcast. Her back was against the window after she draws down the curtain. Her long golden brown hair covered her pale face and slowly sliding down into the darkness of the room. She’d been wide awake since the early hours of the morning. After she woke up from a nightmare and was peeping through the curtains to be sure the stalker was still there.

The city never truly slept, but tonight its usual buzz felt muted, like the calm before a violent storm. Damon and Sarah slipped through the dimly lit streets of the east sector, moving with purpose beneath the flickering streetlights. I tightened my grip on my daughter, shielding her tiny form with my arms. She whimpered softly in her sleep, oblivious to the nightmare unfolding around her. I forced myself to focus.
