I whispered, my voice breaking.
“I know,” Mr. George said softly, reaching across the table to squeeze my hand. “But you’re strong, Maya. You’ll get through this.”
I nodded, though I didn’t feel strong. I thanked him, my voice barely holding together, and stumbled out to my car. The drive to work was a blur, my mind spinning with everything I’d just learned. My father had a second child,a daughter I never knew existed. My parents had kept this secret from me my entire life. The betrayal stung, but more than that, the thought of Lassie out there, alone, watching from a distance, broke my heart.
