“You carry it.” Ruth stood in the garden the way Abena had stood at the water. The way Helena had pressed one finger against the peony on a Saturday morning. The way James Obi had stood in a corridor in 1992. The way her mother had stood at the coast when the argument needed to be clear. Present. Receiving. Ready. “More,” Ruth said. Her own way. With the full twenty-three years of what the word contained for her. More accountability. More treatment. More cases. More communities. More capacity. More of the argument reaching the people it was true for.

Chapter 37 Lilith The swinging and slamming of the door caught our attention, and I flinched backwards, lowering my gaze in shame. My cheeks burnt bright red in embarrassment, and I hated myself for my lack of self-control. Raphael strode in, his blazing eyes rested on me, and his aura signified that he was not pleased by the awkward sight. He stood over us, growling lowly like a fire-breathing monster. “Interrupting the moment?” He grinded his teeth as his chest rose and fell in irritation.

Jenoah embraced him and they patted each other back strongly, like they were some old friends. "Jenoah," Father stepped back and looked into his eyes. He looked like a strong alpha man. "I hope this won't turn out to be a mistake." He said, looking at Russo. "Not at all. Russo is here for new opportunities in our business, and the prosperity of our people." Jenoah said, his smile never left him. Russo stood there, his predatory gaze noticed everything. "For that, you're always welcome here, young man." Dad said to him, turning his full attention to Russo.

he murmured but it sounded like he was talking to himself. I wanted to ignore him and just leave but before I could even move he stepped forward again offering his hand for a handshake "I am Rook, the viper king's VP" he said his smile becoming wider. So he is also related to that bastard, I bit back the urge to laugh out of anger and just glared at him, does he really thinks I am going to shake that hand of his? Well he must be dreaming. I glared at him one last time before I walked pass him, I have far more important things to do than to chat with some Rook guy, "wait" he called as he stared at me, I ignored him and continued walking.

What if another crisis hits and we lose everything?” Ruth reached across the table and covered his hand with both of hers. “Baby. Life is always gon’ be life. There’s always gon’ be something. Bills. Emergencies. People threatening to drag you into their mess. If you waiting for a perfect moment to move forward, you gon’ be waiting until Jesus comes back.” Theo chuckled. “You sound like Pastor Randall.” Ruth rolled her eyes. “Don’t play with me. I sound like a woman who married into this family and survived.”

That made her a target. I stood and moved deeper into the shelves, running my fingers along the cracked spines. A book of lunar runes, its leather cover marked with silver filigree, caught my attention. Inside, sketches of crescent moons and unfamiliar sigils danced across the pages. Some had annotations in an old dialect, one my family rarely used. I whispered the translations under my breath: light woven into flesh, a daughter of tides, sought by shadow and flame. Each phrase was a riddle that offered no clear truth.

Chapter Two “I swear to you,” I start, hands shaking. “I’m not working with the Devil.” “Please.” Ruth pushes off the desk and goes to the fireplace. She waves her hands over the logs, conjuring a small fire. She purses her lips, looking at the small flames in annoyance, and waves her hand over the logs again, doubling the fire. “There’s only one reason you’d find brimstone, and we both know what it is.”

She started looking around in fear, wondering what to do now. "Where shall I go, O God..." Because there was no window in the room, she began to think in great distress. "Wherever I go, this door will never break." Unable to understand anything, she hid under her bed and began to build up her courage and prepare herself for the next moment.

Ruth said Cassandra waited to hear what she missed "To the world, we went up in flames," Ruth said and pressed her lips "Oh yeah, I forgot that but we can still say is a miracle. Miracles happen all the time," she said throwing her hands in the air "Cassandra please be serious," Mrs Brown replied and Ruth smiled "Okay, you read the bible right?" she asked leading forward to raise her argument "Yes," Mrs Brown responded waiting to hear what other reason she will bring up to ask her to relax "Okay, from the little I know, God created us, in his image according to his likeness. Is that right?" she asked with a frown
