Everyone is happy celebrating Christmas and is waiting for morning to come to open the gifts that have been placed under the Christmas tree. Felix was motionless in his car while gazing at the hubbub from the top of the hill overlooking the brightly lit downtown Chicago, filled with colorful lights. The church bells rang to each other to greet the holy Christmas morning full of joy. Too bad he didn't feel what most Chicagoans are feeling right now.

Besides Sundays, of course, Christmas Eve is like the holiest day of the century. Families get together and celebrate the holiday while anticipating Christmas Day. In the middle of the afternoon, light snow was falling outside the house and automobile horns could be heard. "They've arrived!" As she sprinted to the window, Gracie yelled. She looked outside and saw the car light turned off. "It is James, Henry, and Kelvin. They are all here!" She continued to scream. "Really? James is here?" As she walked up to the window, Jessie had a pan of cookies in her hand. She gave Gracie the pan. "Go on. Eat it with milk. Tell Mary to prepare some for you."

Christmas is one day. Yule is nearly two weeks. – Nessie Neither of the girls liked going into the basement of the funeral home. It had become the best place to hide their Christmas gifts. After the girls went to bed Christmas Eve, Pagan and Shiloh began bringing the gifts up. “You didn’t get them too much, did you?” Pagan teased. They were still carrying his presents up on the third trip. “Nothing compared to you.” She laughed as they placed the latest load around the tree.

I smiled at him, recalling the conversation we had before Christmas, his words echoing in my mind. “I always tell my kids, Christmas comes with its own miracles. Who knows? Maybe this year’s your lucky one.” I chuckled dryly and hit the elevator button, glancing back at him. “I wouldn’t count on it, Mr. Jones. Miracles? Christmas? I don’t believe in that kind of thing.” The elevator doors slid open, and as I stepped inside, I heard him call out, “Maybe this Christmas will change your mind, Miss Samantha!” As the doors closed, I sighed, shaking my head. Christmas miracles? I scoffed under my breath, feeling the familiar ache settle in.

“Crystal ma’am! Hey Joey, get this car an oil change, pronto!” I can pay for this but I hardly can scrounge enough of my pay for me and my kid’s Christmas dinner. Borrowing money is out of the question, even asking my worthless ex-husband won’t do. Oh well, I’ll cross the bridge when we get there. After all, it will be December first tomorrow and that leaves twenty-four days to figure out a solution and hope for a miracle. Maybe even pray for a Christmas miracle for me and my babies…
