Halfway to the first landing, the nausea slammed into me even harder.
“Agh,” I groaned as my knees buckled.
My stomach heaved hard, acid flooding my throat, and the world tipped sideways. Before I could get hold of the situation the banister slipped from my fingers and even as I tried to catch myself, one arm flailing, my foot missed the next step completely.
The fall happened in slow motion and all at once.
My shoulder took the first hit, then my hip, pain exploding bright and hot as I tumbled.
I curled tight around my belly on instinct—Protect The Baby, Protect The Baby—but gravity didn’t care.
