I felt her gaze shift—trailing lower along my back. Then she froze, I noticed the change immediately. Her eyes widened slightly as she stared at something behind me. Before I could turn, her fingers gently touched the mark on my back, the one that had been there for as long as I could remember. “How did you get this mark?” she asked quietly. I glanced at her through the mirror. “It’s a birthmark,” I said. “My mum believes it’s some kind of curse, she says maybe that’s why I don’t have a wolf.”

I looked nothing like either of my parents, and my father would make jokes about me being the milk man’s kid.
