Balconies and battlements clung to the rock at impossible angles, lit by flickering braziers that cast molten gold across the dark stone. Massive gates of reinforced steel stood at its base, guarded by statues that might have been warriors—or monsters. I couldn’t tell. Their faces were worn smooth, their forms half-claimed by the mountain. A shiver crawled down my spine, and I wasn’t sure if it was fear or awe. Fenric’s voice pulled me back to the present. “Welcome to Blackreach.” My heart sank. “Your new home.”
