Their eyes were solid black, no whites, no pupils, just darkness that seemed to drink the light. They wore leather armor studded with metal spikes, and each carried a curved blade at their hip. The taller one smiled. His teeth were sharp. "Travelers," he said. His voice was smooth, almost musical. "What brings you so close to our border?"

I cheered, thanked him happily and smiled at Ellis. "We're going to go see elves. Don't freak out and keep your eyes closed until your feet are touching solid ground," I instructed. I snapped warmer clothes on us both and held Ellis around his narrow waist as I transported us both to the dökkálfar tribe's mound. I opened my eyes to a lovely landscape. Even though the dark elves gave me the creeps, the land their mound was located in was stunning. Thick pines and lovely untouched lands.
