Keiran paused. Spiro reached to his neck and removed a thin chain I had not noticed before. Hanging from it was a tiny black scale pendant, no larger than the nail of my thumb. It looked dark at first, but when it caught the light, I saw faint lines of deep blue running through it, like night holding lightning under its skin. Spiro held it out to Keiran. “Wear this,” Spiro instructed. Keiran looked at the pendant, then at him. “What is it?”
