The steep slope of the mountain was making it harder for him to get away as it was already eroded and rocks were falling down from afar. Looking back, he could see the flicker of torches the darkened soldiers were carrying.

I smiled sweetly. “Good thing I didn’t come here the easy way.” Recognition flickered in his eyes. “Scholarship,” he said.

So how did he know who I was? Slowly, I turned back around. His eyes locked onto mine immediately. That same unreadable expression remained on his face. “How do you know my name?” I asked softly. For a second, he didn’t answer. The hallway noise faded behind us while students continued rushing past, throwing curious glances in our direction. Then the corner of his mouth lifted slightly. “Welcome to Blackthorn,” he said quietly. The words should have sounded polite. Instead, they felt like a warning.

Dawn broke cold and merciless over Blackthorn lands. The sky was the color of bruised steel, streaked with thin veins of pale gold that did nothing to warm the air. Frost clung to the grass like shattered glass, crunching under Elara’s boots as she followed Kael down the narrow stone path that led away from the manor. Behind her walked Lira and a growing crowd of pack members—silent at first, then murmuring, then openly snarling. The sound rolled over her like distant thunder.

Not Blackthorn. Something new. Something waiting. And deep in the forest, the calm before the storm quietly began to break.

Louve POV Blackthorn Crossing was a place that had never belonged cleanly to any pack. An old stone clearing in the deep neutral forest, equidistant between territories, surrounded by ancient trees and the particular atmospheric density of a place that had witnessed significant things over centuries. We arrived two hours before dawn.

It just kept coming, slow and thick, like the earth was leaking. "Step... step... step," I whispered to myself. I was a Rogue. I was used to carrying heavy things. I was used to running until my lungs felt like they were full of fire. But this was different. Every time Darius gasped, I felt a sharp pain in my own chest. The Bond-String was pulling on me. It was tight. It was a lead rope, dragging me toward the castle. We reached the edge of the trees. The fortress of Blackthorn sat on the hill. It looked like a giant grey tooth against the dark sky. The green mist was swirling around the towers. It looked like a sick snake.

He grabbed me around my throat, and I clawed and scratched as much as I could at him but before long, I could feel myself blacking out. “Please,” I rasped with my last bit of air.

Darius said, his voice calm but edged with finality. Sarah blinked once. “I wasn’t suggesting otherwise.” Seraphina’s gaze remained steady. “Then what were you suggesting?” Sarah turned to her, feigning innocence. “Only that this pack needs unity. Familiarity. People trust what they know.” Seraphina smiled faintly. “Then they’ll learn to know me.” A flicker of irritation crossed Sarah’s eyes before she smoothed it away. Rhyden approached quickly, interrupting before the tension could sharpen further. “My Alpha,” he said, bowing his head. “Scouts report Blackthorn has moved again. Still outside our borders. Still watching.”
