Kate answered and brushed against her brother. "Thankyou." Oli said. "Your welcome, I'll leave you here to get to know the Grove a little better. Follow my scent back home, when your done." But I can’t let it show. I put the gun down slowly, making sure to keep my expression even, despite the storm raging inside me. “Shit, I need to pee. Where is your bathroom," I say with as much confidence I can muster after all that. “Sure, it's down there," she points to the door, "on your left. But don’t take too long. We’ve got work to do.” I turn sharply, desperate to escape the suffocating air in the room. I slam the bathroom door behind me, desperate to get away from Blaire’s sickening words. I barely make it to the sink before the nausea hits me like a tidal wave.

THE RETURN ~TATE'S POV~ I was angry-cleaning. It is a specific type of cleaning. It involves a lot of bleach, aggressive scrubbing, and pop music played at a volume that probably violates the Geneva Convention. I was at "The Safehouse"—the off-campus apartment Mathias had bought under a shell company name because he didn't trust dorm security. It was sleek, modern, and currently smelled like lemons and rage. I was on my hands and knees, scrubbing a scuff mark on the baseboards. I was wearing one of Mathias's old black t-shirts and nothing else.

But the lemon smell is overpowered by the horrible scent permeating the room. “What’s that awful smell?” I say, waving my hand in front of my nose. “It sucks to have a sensitive wolf nose right about now,” Callan says. “This is bleach. It’s the only thing I could think of to get the bloodstains off the floor.” “Is Ethan okay?” I ask, sitting my backside on one of the chairs. “Other than a bad hangover, he’ll be fine by tomorrow.” Callan grabs a pink-stained towel and wipes the water and bleach from the floor.

Alex’s POV The room smelled like bleach, the kind that burns your nose and makes your eyes sting. Not clean, not safe—just sharp, like it’s trying to scrub away something that won’t leave. She kept a bottle under the sink, said it kept the rot out. I didn’t know if she meant the tiles or me. I sat on the edge of the bathtub, my hands raw from scrubbing. Not because they were dirty. It was something else, something stuck under my skin, no matter how hard I tried to wash it away. The water was cold now, but I kept going.

The putrid scent of antiseptic assaults my nose as I pace in the hospital's emergency room, waiting for the doctor to tell me why my Luna, Beta, and Gamma are in the state they are in. The many washes did not make my eyes any less red, but it made the tears stop and made my vision clear enough for me to see a bottle of bleach on the wood stand above the toilet seat. My hands trembled as I held the bottle in my hand, thinking over and over on the idea I had just conceived and the words I had said to Nana. ‘I get to choose how I die,’ I thought. The smell of winter mint and pine is completely gone, replaced by the sharp, stinging stench of hospital bleach. Inside my head, Asher is screaming. My wolf is clawing at my own ribcage, throwing himself against the walls of my mind like a wild animal trapped in a burning cage. He lets out a low, pathetic whimper that makes my own throat ache.
