My eyelids felt like they had been glued shut. A heavy, exhausting pressure pinned my entire body to the mattress, rendering my head, arms, and legs completely unresponsive. The moment I tried to breathe deeply, the sharp, overwhelming stench of bleach and medicinal alcohol invaded my nostrils, making me wince.
A rhythmic, electronic beep pierced the silence, drilling straight into my skull.
I forced my eyes open. The world was a blinding, over-exposed blur of harsh light and moving shadows. I blinked rapidly, waiting for the glare to recede until the room finally settled into focus. Blue and white privacy curtains hemmed me in.
