** --- **The First Blight** By dawn, the wasteland begins to *change*. Patches of grass sprout around the sapling, lush and green-but their roots writhe like serpents, strangling a survivor who strays too close. His body dissolves into mulch, feeding the soil. The survivors retreat, but Jarek lingers, his prosthetic arm-now fused with Keep shards-glowing faintly. "It's not just growing," he says, crouching to inspect a carnivorous flower. "It's *learning*." The flower snaps at his fingers, its petals lined with teeth. He incinerates it with a pulse from his prosthetic. "The Rootmother's memories are in the soil. It knows how you fight."

The soft rustling became a sharp, synchronized hiss. "Ambush!" Lucas roared. From the canopy above, figures dropped like stones. They weren't wolves. They were the Blight-Walkers—men and women whose bodies had been twisted by the Sleeper’s Root, their skin grey and cracked, their eyes glowing with that same violet fire they had seen in Vargos.

My voice broke with panic, my hands scrambling for my blade. “Quick, Eren, torches—now!” Aziz barked. Flint scratched. A torch flared, then another. Uncle Eren shoved one into a wall sconce, the flames casting long, jittering shadows. Then it happened. Our hellblades began to glow. A red pulse, faint at first, then stronger, like a heartbeat shared between them all. The glow shimmered across the stone, reflecting in our eyes. My throat tightened. “Why is it glowing already, I don’t see anything?”

I was done. I blink back the blood seeping past my eye. It burns my vision, but I welcome the moisture. Father gave me a beating I would never forget. He beat me badly and I thought it was over. Until pain like no other radiated from the pit of my stomach, poison. My father had poisoned me. If it weren't for Jed, I think he would have killed me. I had come home and seen a few bottles of scotch on the dinner table, I don't know what could have caused father to drink so heavily, because he never did, but whatever it was, it was bad.

I asked. “An Other,” she said, her voice braking at the end. I took a breath in through my teeth. “It just left?” “Elaeya beat it.” “Well, I’ll be damned. She has some spunk.” She snorted but was still not looking at me. “But it’s over now, right?” “The nursed washed her, but the blight would not go away.” “Blight?” I asked. “The rot that Others infect people with. Running water was supposed to wash it away. She said it would. But it didn’t for her,” she said closing her eyes. “The nurse was worried. Kade will kill me for this.”

My mother was nothing but ash and the palace a ruin of burning stones. There was nothing left for me there, so I walked away towards Skyfall, hoping to find work in the aeries of the east. For a time, I even worked in the starstone mines, digging up ore to power the cities, until the symptoms started. My nails and eyes were turning blue, my fingers shaking at night hours after my work was done. I had seen a few other drakes fall to the sickness, and I knew, from my travels east, what it was–it was the same blight plaguing the humans, turning them into the walking dead.

Darian came in. Concerned look. Very worried. Apparently I didn't scream as loud as I thought I had. Excellent. "You're hurt?" I shook my head at once. Nope. He stood by the door. Obviously not sold. It was a nightmare. Darian nodded his head slowly. A look of comprehension spread over his face. Yeah. He, too, had nightmares. Everyone knew that. The scars of the rogue attack that killed his parents remained. Another scar. But scars all the same.

"The warriors and the healthy don't eat tonight. Not a crumb. We give every calorie to the mothers and the scouts. We need the scouts' eyes sharp for the trail, and the mothers need to stay strong enough to keep the infants warm. We carry the hunger so they don't have to." Jax watched as a young Whisper-Wind mother a few yards away tried to soothe a crying child. Her face was hollow, her eyes sunken into dark pits of exhaustion. The "Council’s Blight" hadn't just murdered their crops; it had seemingly sucked the vitality right out of their blood. They looked like gray ghosts drifting through the silver moonlight.
