It dropped down from its perch, opening its wings to stall its landing, but only a little. Ilyria woke crying out in pain as the owl sank its claws into her flesh. “Remember, Ilyria,” said the owl, “This is only what you want it to be.” Ilyria sat up, rubbing her arm. The owl flew out the window past the monkey calling, “Be ready.”

Too slow to be a bird panicking against glass. I froze. My blood turned sharp. Tap. Tap. Tap. It was coming from the window. Tyler didn’t stir. I slipped from bed silently, pulling the curtain aside with careful fingers. An owl sat on the sill. It was huge and silent with eyes dark as obsidian, feathers mottled white and gray like moonlight on water. It didn’t move when it saw me. It simply stared. Between its tightly clutched talons was a cowrie. My heart stopped.

A tyrant disguised as a family man. She stayed there, curled up on her bed, her gaze lost in the void. With the curtains drawn, the room was bathed in a ghastly light. The air was heavy, almost suffocating. And the silence… oppressive. --- On the evening of the third day, the door slowly opened. Rhonda entered the room, her face lit with a chilling, mocking, almost triumphant smile. Seeing Chantelle, curled up on the bed, her face swollen, reddened from crying, she let out a contemptuous little laugh.

I jogged my chin to the box. I watched with bated breath as Persephone reached into the box and pulled out a black book. I cocked my head and looked at the cover. The Silvercloud owl totem was etched into the cover in gold. Persephone gently traced the owl before opening the book and giggling. “What is so funny?” I asked as I moved closer to look. I’m going to die of embarrassment. The book isn’t some tome of knowledge about the Silvercloud shaman power. No, it’s a photo album, and I don’t know which of my parents chose the first picture.

Just as abruptly as the hail had started, it stopped. The driver peered out, trying to see as he parked the bus, hoping he was safely off the road. Lightning arced from cloud to cloud, and thunder crashed again. Staring out the windshield, he found himself ducking as a huge owl flew straight out of the driving sheets of rain.

Syllabus Arkane would not just let such an insult go. I was contemplating this when I heard the wolves start to howl. It was getting late. I stood and cautiously peeked out the window. The woods were alive with the sounds of night creatures. Crickets, cicadas, even the odd hoot of an owl. This eased my mind a bit, if anything untoward was happening the woods would tell me. So I went back to waiting. Soon I heard the scrape, knock, knock, indicating Clayton had arrived. I let him in.

The air is light and refreshing, I find myself closing my eyes. Opening my eyes once more, I continue to walk forward. As I walk the grass beneath me begins to grow warm. I shift my gaze down and watch as the light green grass begins to glow yellow. From the middle of the clearing purple fog begins to form. The fog is thick and dark as it begins to further spread. I watch as the fog suddenly begins to spiral upward. Slowly the fog begins to clear and a large black dog with glowing purple eyes stands before me. Wisps of black flames surround the dog. The creature approaches me and then lies down in front of me.

The silence is almost eerie. Morgana comes to a screeching halt when I feel her ears snapback and her fur stands on end on high alert. Before I can utter what I was thinking to her I hear a low growl from my right side. We turn to see a very large chocolate brown wolf standing there looking at us. His eyes burning a bright red like rubies that have been set ablaze. His low guttural growl would almost shake the ground in the deafening silence of the forest.
