When I woke up early the next morning, no one was beside my bed. Mom had already gone to make breakfast. For some reason, my stomach hurt badly this morning. I forced myself out of bed and went to wash up. While I was brushing my teeth, I kept gagging and retching. In the end, I threw up a mouthful of blood. I turned the tap on and rinsed it all away as I had done so often, and then I continued to brush my teeth.

The first visible sign came. When she brushed her teeth in preparation for bed, Debby spat out sputum into the basin, the red of blood standing stark against the white foam of worked toothpaste. All Hazel was able to bring up were saliva and a yellowish liquid that tasted and smelled like shit. She scrunched up her nose trying to stop herself from inhaling the sick smell but it was not possible.

That light was too pure and bright, revealing me for who I was. The filth churning inside me was something detestable and loathsome. It was so overwhelming that I did not dare to touch it.
