John staggered to his feet, teeth clenched, body trembling from the force building inside him.
Sarah grabbed his arm. “We have to run.”
“I can’t,” he said. “If I leave… he’ll take control.”
“What do you mean?” Her voice cracked.
“He’s using me to return. I’m the vessel, Sarah. That’s what the blood vow was really about.”
Behind them, the creature pulled itself fully into view. It wasn’t just bones it wore remnants of a crown melted to its skull, and eyes like coal burned in hollow sockets. A thick shadow rolled off its back, covering the ruined altar in a blanket of dread.
