Brady almost whispered as blood came out of his mouth. Khali could not perceive the sound due to the multitude of thoughts inundated her mind. The sheer volume of these thoughts was so overwhelming that it rendered her deaf to any external stimuli. As Brady’s eyes gradually shut, Khali sensed a trickle of blood seeping into her nostrils while the veins in her head seemed on the verge of exploding. Slowly but surely, the world around them descended into darkness.

Suddenly, the light around us dimmed and warped as if the room swayed beneath my feet. The edges of vision grew soft and dark, the sounds muffled, like I was hearing a word from underwater. A dull pain bloomed at the base of my skull, sprinkling through my limbs with frightening speed. “Mommy!!!” Hayley’s voice pierced through the haze, small and trembling. “Hey!!!” Demrid shouted, “You are getting pale. Please, Ann. Stay with me!”

Voices swirled around me, sharp and angry, cutting through the haze clouding my mind, the room smelled of iron, sharp and metallic. When I finally forced my eyes open, the first thing I saw was blood. It splattered across the marble floor like dark petals, my breath caught. And then I saw him. Raymond stood in the center of the room, his chest heaving, his hands dripping crimson. His golden eyes burned with barely controlled rage. The nearest servant knelt before him, trembling violently, their faces pale with terror. “Who brought it?” Raymond’s voice was a growl, each word laced with deadly promise. “Who dared leave that tray?”

His expression is the same as mine and I let out a frustrated breath as I move to check on Raya. I notice that Adam checks on Luther, but I don’t pay much attention to him. I’m too focused on the girl in front of me, I feel helpless because I don’t know the best way to help her. Her skin is paler and there’s fang marks on her neck with a little bit of blood there. My voice is rough as I say, “He fed on her.” Adam’s voice is gruff as he responds solemnly, “I know.” He pauses, “Father is going to kill him.”

Blood seeped through the fabric, warm against my shaking hands. I swallowed hard. “Okay. First step: stop bleeding. Second step: don’t panic. Third step: find magical vampire first-aid kit.” A drawer slid open with a loud shunk. I yelped. “BRENDA! That is NOT helping!” Inside the drawer sat a crystal bottle full of thick dark liquid. I stared. I blinked. I stared again. “…Is that blood?” The lights flickered once. Yes. “Is it vintage? Like… does blood expire?”

But my gut told me to look closer. I nudged the door open just a little more, just enough for the darkness beyond to take shape. The hallway was dark, the only light coming from the dim sconces along the walls. I took a hesitant step forward, my heartbeat thundering in my ears. The air smelled of something metallic and unmistakable. Blood. Then I saw them. Axel and Devon staggered under Ryan’s weight, his white shirt soaked through with crimson. Blood dripped from his fingertips, leaving a trail in their wake. Ryan's head lolled to the side, his face pale, his lips slightly parted like he was struggling to hold on to consciousness.

I looked down to see my own blood, pooling over the open pages of the book given to me by the sprites, a blade with black diamonds on the hilt and a large deep red ruby sitting inside a metal frame at the base of the handle, protruded from my stomach. Gasping I could feel my life fade away, I took one last look to see that Joshua had been ran through, his lifeless body laid crumpled on the cold bloody ground. I could hardly recognize the scream of terror that escaped my lips before I felt my life leave my body. Draven.
