He held the dagger up to Ruben and Ruben stepped forward taking Batton’s other wrist and slashing it open as well. Kat gasped in a breath as Ruben stood side on to Batton and raised his hand, igniting Blood Reign and Batton’s blood started to glow, lifting up from the ground and, like dust particles in the sunlight, drifted up in small filaments and disappearing. Batton grimaced and a pained strangled noise escaped him as the Blood Reign started to pull the blood from his open veins, draining him completely. “You’ll kill him…” Kat breathed, watching with a morbid fascination.

The blood starts pouring out of my mouth uncontrollably, I cough while splashes of blood defile the ground under me. “Don't be scared, I'm not going to hurt you”, the shade rubs the back of its hand down my cheek, “I'm just going to drain your body of its worthless life”. The shadow figure laughed maniacally in my face. I sense the thirst for blood and the hatred towards me. I start to turn to run, but my body immediately falls limp. I start to military crawl, dragging my legs across the floor.

These halflings, or Shades as they came to be known, were feared and hated by the mortal clans. The Alphas of the seven Clans, leaders of their people and protectors of their lands, were disgusted by the existence of these half-blooded creatures. They saw the Shades as an abomination, a stain on the purity of their bloodlines. In their eyes, the Shades were a constant reminder of the horrors the demons had wrought, and they vowed to cleanse the world of their taint. They declared a great hunt, a campaign of violence and death that would span generations. The Shades were hunted down like animals, dragged from their homes and slaughtered in the streets. No mercy was shown, no quarter given.

They screamed - an awful, shrill sound like metal tearing - and crumpled to the dirt.

Felix stared at the blood in disbelief before he jerked his head up to look at me. "Why?" I set my wine glass down and looked down at him from the tip of my nose. "I'm just fulfilling my responsibility as a mother." Felix's eyes widened when he finally registered my words. The wolfsbane worked quickly, especially since Felix had been caught completely off-guard. It didn't take long before he crumpled to the ground.
