“You don’t get it. He can’t end me.” “You figure your rank shields you? You witnessed what he did for a mere brush! This… this sparks a battle.” “It’s not the rank,” he explained, his hold firming a touch. He inhaled deeply, like bracing for yet another earth-shaking truth. “It’s blood ties. Ethan… he’s unyielding. He’s a despot. He’s eaten up by a link he loathes. But he’d never take me out.” His gaze locked on mine, brimming with a odd blend of boldness and acceptance. “Because I’m his kin.”

I looked away again, trying to calm the thoughts in my head. For most of my life, I had grown up unwanted. It was difficult to suddenly believe someone out there might actually care about me. Damon gently touched my hand. “You are not that abandoned girl anymore.” Before I could answer, Mira walked toward us with several old books in her arms. “I found more records connected to the prophecy,” she said. Rylan immediately looked interested. “Anything useful?” “Possibly.” Mira placed the books carefully on one of the nearby tables. “Most of the records are incomplete, but there are repeated mentions of three bloodlines joining together.”

"Now. The code. The sequence you memorized and locked away. Give it to me." He reached down, his fingers hovering agonizingly close to the fresh, bleeding cut on my arm, threatening to pry the raw flesh apart to get to the subdermal tracker beneath. A scream built in my chest, but I bit my lower lip so hard I tasted the copper tang of my own blood. Through the blinding haze of physical pain and the crushing weight of betrayal, a spark of pure, venomous rage flared to life deep inside me.

“Mine carries lineage. If I ever betray you, let this act bind me to death.” Before she could protest, I brought the blade to her palm and made a shallow cut, just deep enough to draw a thin line of red. She gasped but didn’t pull away. Then, with deliberate care, I pressed our palms together. The moment our blood mingled, a jolt of heat surged between us. It wasn’t like the fire she had conjured earlier, this was older, deeper, almost sentient. It coiled around us like a living thing, threading through my veins and hers, sealing us in a bond that went beyond words.

Something in Nyra's expression shifted to something almost like approval. "Tell me about the First Blood," Lena said, using Nyra's phrase from the courtyard. "Not the theoretical version. The practical one. What does it mean that I carry it?" Nyra folded her talon-ringed hands on the table. “That we’d thank you? That your flowers would bring my brother back? You’re naive. We’re Blackwoods. We have honor.” For a moment, only his breathing on the line. Then: “Look, I get it. More than you know. But we have nothing to do with what happened to your family. You and I… we’re called to become heirs. Whether we like it or not. We can sit back, do nothing, and let everyone bleed. Or…” He let it hang there. “Or we can try to stop it. Before it’s too late.” The silence felt heavy. My heart thumped in my ears. It was the stupidest idea ever. A trap, for sure.

I reached the reading table. There was a book on it. Face down, open, the spine slightly worn from being held many times in the same position. I recognized the binding; I had seen books from this series before, in the palace library, part of a collection on the history of shifter bonds in Aetherwyn. I picked it up carefully and turned it over. The chapter heading at the top of the open page read: Suppressed Bonds and Their Consequences. I stood at the table in the quiet library and looked at that heading for a long time.

I stood there, stunned, a wave of bitterness washing over me. Without thinking, I gripped the ruby necklace around my neck—the first gift Keith ever gave me. I had never taken it off since the day I got it. Daniel eyed me with a smirk, leaning in close enough for me to feel his breath on my ear. "Elsie, just look at you. You're like a lost little puppy." I turned my gaze away, heart twisting tight in my chest. Maybe this was for the best. At least this way, when I’m gone, he won’t mourn me for long.
