Its mouth opened wide in a ripping, guttural screech-hiss, fangs long and curved like hooks.
It lunged at me.
With everything inside me, I swung the candle stand. The air whistled around it. My eyes slammed shut as instinct took over.
A violent snarl-hiss exploded in front of me, louder than before, filled with savage rage. For a heartbeat I thought I had hit it.
I forced my eyes open.
The viper was inches from my face, coils knotted, tail whipping the ground in harsh, cracking slaps. But it was no longer moving forward.
