And it’s so pretty!” I crouch beside her, pretending to examine everything carefully. “Hmm, you think we should eat it? Or should we leave it for the elf in case he comes back?” She gasps, horrified. “No! He made it for us! We have to eat it!” She scrambles into her seat, already reaching for the snowman pancakes.

“You should visit your brother at the bakery next!” Off Oliver went to the bakery. These elves made sugarplum cookies and candy cane squares! But when Oliver tried to stir the cookie dough, he fell into the giant mixing bowl. “Oliver, look out!” one of the elves shouted. “Sorry, Ollie!” his brother said. “You’re too little for the bakery. Maybe your special job is at the bookmaker’s shop.”

***One Month Later Garlands of olive branches and daisies swept through Basharr's palace. The animated statues played music constantly. Courtiers and attendants hustled to brush gold leaf across the palms of every visitor. It was meant to show the prosperity all elves would share under Eden and Violet's reign.

Another lady complained. Aurora ignored them and walked to the side. All the lady’s gifts to Aspen were set on the table. Only two gifts had been unwrapped. One was Blanc’s fairytale book, and the other was an action figure. Aurora first checked the action figure. Nothing suspicious. Then she picked up the book. “Careful with that book.” Blanc reminded her, “It was the first edition, signed by the author.” The book had been around for many years, so its pages had become yellow and fragile. Some pages were stuck together.

"That sounds like a good idea." Later that afternoon, Emily and Amy set out for a much-needed break. Amy had planned a day filled with activities to distract Emily from her worries. They started with a visit to a cozy café downtown, where they indulged in decadent pastries and steaming cups of coffee.
