Northbound Elf Book Novels & Stories

As she steadied herself, she gazed slightly at a warm amber glow caught her attention. Across the narrow road stood an old bookstore tucked between two abandoned buildings. Its faded wooden sign swayed gently in the wind. A Soft yellow light spilled from its windows, making it look strangely untouched by the storm outside. Without thinking, Elara crossed the street. A tiny brass bell chimed the moment she pushed the door open. A Warm air wrapped around her instantly. She took a deep breath through her nostrils. The scent of old paper, cedarwood, and freshly brewed tea filled the room.

the girl asked. "I am," I said, standing straighter. She exhaled. "Good. My name is Elara. This is my younger brother Kato. We came because... I think we’re connected." Sybil stepped forward. "What are you?" Elara looked her in the eye, completely unafraid. "I’m part elf. Part witch. Part phoenix." Phoenix? My wolf stirred. "The fire you felt in your dreams," Snowy whispered. That was her light calling out.

She learned nothing new from books dating back to the 19th century at the oldest. She found the book she wanted not in a library. It was crammed in piles of one of the Block 71’s book vendors. A dilapidated book–with pages torn–containing ancient tales. The bookseller elf, in a gown, asked for a book so thin a price that nearly forced her soul out of her body. “A dirty secret vampires don’t want to see another daylight,” she laughed.

“Then why does your face look like that when you look at him?” Elara sighed. Not the dramatic kind. The tired, deep kind — the kind people sigh when they’re about to open a door they’ve kept locked for their personal reasons. She walked over to the tall shelf near the window and ran her fingers along the spines of dusty books before pulling one out. “I guess,” she said, turning back to me, “we’ll have to start from the basics.” She handed me the book. The cover was old, the edges worn. Gold lettering barely visible.

And yet the last light of the evening fell through. Golden. Warm. Almost alive. There were three beds in the room. Little. Ordinary. Despite the decades. A closet. A table. A shelf full of books. All covered with dust. And yet nothing was left. Not really. It's safe. Like someone was looking after it. “Look at this.” Elio already knelt beside the shelf. The books were old. Very old. Fairy tales. Kidneys. School books. Character blocks. And there was a little notebook in between.

I plan for us to see a little more of them in Book 2 - FATED TO THE GRUMPY BETA - Elara & Darren’s story.
