"This creature is extremely rare. It's called a Snowbug. I won't go into the details, but when it encounters a human, it will actively burrow into their body without leaving any wounds.

"Fly." In number sequence, each bug, a minature drone designed to look like a real insect, slowly rises. BROOK'S POV I sat on the couch with Rowan tucked against my side, the television playing his favorite cartoon, Bluey, loud enough to fill the room with cheerful voices and playful music. He was completely into it, eyes bright, body moving along with every little scene like he was part of it. One minute, he was pointing at the screen; the next, he was trying to act out what the characters were doing, his small hands flying as he talked nonstop. “Mummy, look! Look!” he said, tugging at my arm. “They’re playing the game again. You have to do it too.”

Fred walked in, leaving us outside. “Get on your knees and crawl,” Blue commanded, his tone giving nothing away. His expression was back to the neutral mask it had. I couldn't even tell what was going through his mind. “You want me to crawl?” I knitted my brows, my face scrunched up in a frown. “Crawl to the bed,” he repeated, his voice hard. I gulped, looking at the door before I turned to look down the hall, my face filled with longing at the stairs which were far from my reach.

My mother takes my hand and leads me down the stairs to what appears to be their basement. When we reach the bottom step, my jaw drops as my eyes take in the scenery of the room.
