TASHA'S PLACE 7 PM Bluey has been at home since Tasha left for school. It has been boring to stay alone with no phone to keep whimsy. He read most of the novels she has at home but it's not even enough to kill boredom. She'll be done in the school by 4 and from there, she'll go find a part-time job where she'll be till 9 so he'll have to stay alone till then. He got hungry and thought of making noodles but he doesn't even know how to light the cooker so he gave up.

I stopped walking very slowly, like if I moved too fast I’d trigger a trap. Blaire stood by her locker with two girls beside her, phone in hand. She looked bright and rested, which meant she’d slept, unlike me, who had spent half the night staring at my ceiling thinking about couch laps and cameras and the fact that I still hadn’t written a conclusion paragraph. “I’m busy,” I said preemptively. Blaire smiled. “You’re always busy. Almost like you have a secret life.” “Almost like I have bills,” I replied. She held her phone up. “So, hypothetically, if someone at this school was the girl in that photo…”

“You know nothing! I agreed to this stupid deal to get you off of my back. I don’t know why you won’t reject me. There is nothing about me that is nice. You will soon see!” The outburst was a little unexpected and even Bree takes a step back from her friend. Blue backs down when she realises that she had scared her best friend. “I’m going to bed.” She half stumbles out of the kitchen and past Jaxon. The wolfsbane was having more of an effect on her than she let on. Blue crashes through the door to the hallway. We could hear her trying to make her way to her bedroom, randomly bumping into the walls like she had been drinking strong alcohol.

Let alone these material possessions. As I sorted through these gifts one by one, my heart was as still as dead water. By the end, the jewelry box was empty, but my heart felt lighter than ever before. Just as I was about to pack them up to send out, my phone received several WeChat messages. It was from the ranch staff. My little corgi was sick, listless and refusing to eat. The moment I saw the video, my eyes welled up. The staff said the corgi must be missing me, because I used to visit weekly. But this time, I hadn't been there for a long while.

Nonetheless, Erin adored every colour and angle the trusty Moon had to offer him. He sat against the brick-mimicking bed, made himself as comfortable as he could. Minutes more had passed, and he still couldn't make peace with the war between him and his stiff bed.

Feeling giddy, Mikayla put on the bracelet and did a little spin for the guests. Cory let out a whistle. “Ben, this must have cost you a pretty penny.” Ben grinned. “All that matters is that Mikayla loves it.” Turning around, Ben walked toward me. He held a smaller carton and passed it to me. “This one’s for you, Kaycee.” I set my drink down and took the box. The packaging was very basic, without even a seal sticker. I peeked inside and found a generic blind-box plushie. It was from an old series that had been popular two years back.

When the box is empty, she tosses it under the desk and takes a seat, pressing the power button on the monitor. Yes, I realize I am staring and she might punch me if she caught me, but I cannot help it. My eyes seem to wander to her every time I try to focus on the report I am supposed to be writing. When she sinks in her seat and takes out her phone, I drag my eyes off her and focus on the screen in front of me.

“Can’t stop thinking about her, can you?” Bluey shrugged, pretending to be indifferent, though a sly grin tugged at the corners of her mouth. “She’s got a way of sticking in your head, that’s all.” As they continued to play, Bluey’s phone buzzed on the table. She picked it up, squinting at the screen as she read the message that had just come through. It was an address—a very familiar one. April’s address. A slow smile spread across Bluey’s face as she showed the message to Pistol.
