Seven months to read every parenting book written and probably still feel completely unprepared when they actually arrive." Despite everything, that made me smile. "You're planning to read parenting books?" "Already started," he admitted. "Did you know that newborn pups sleep in two-hour intervals? We're going to be exhausted." "We already are exhausted," I pointed out. "We're running a merged pack and trying to rebuild after a war."

She leaned into me briefly as we walked, shoulder to shoulder, and I put my arm around her and we covered the last block to the hotel like that, the city lit around us, the show behind us, thirteen days in Croatia ahead.

"Right now, today, the goal is thirty-eight weeks. The medication and monitoring give us a real chance at that." Yessica looked at the printout. "Can I keep the bookshop?" she said. "Light duties. Mornings only. No heavy lifting, no prolonged standing." Dr. Gillies looked at her steadily. "The shop matters to you." "Yes." "Then keep it. But when Agnes tells you to sit down, sit down." "Agnes always tells me to sit down." "Then Agnes is correct." Dr. Gillies closed the file. "Come Monday. Same time. In the meantime — itching worsens, call immediately. Any new symptoms, call immediately. You have my direct line."

Caden reads the paper. It is arithmetic. Clean, simple, undeniable. Fourteen weeks at the rejection. Standard twin gestation. Rhys has written it out in the spare notation of a man who does not enjoy what he is demonstrating but believes the demonstration is necessary; gestational weeks, approximate birth window, the resulting date range that places the birth between six and ten weeks ago. He has known this.

“All we need now is to book an appointment. Says here your first visit should be around eight weeks.” She swivels slightly, studying my face like I’m a science project. “Do it three weeks from now,” I say quietly. Three weeks. Three weeks to process the fact that there is potentially a microscopic human freeloading inside me. She nods and keeps typing. “Okay. Done. You’re booked for the 21st of January at nine a.m.” She glances at me. “Damion will be back by then. You taking him with you?” The question hangs. Am I? Does he want this? Will he look at me differently?

She went through the books and brought out there of them. "Out of the fifteen you bought, I have read these three. You did a good job." Lauren praised me with a cheerful smile. I mentally patted my head for a job well done. I was just happy seeing Lauren smile. "So how long do you plan on staying here?" She asked me. She darted her eyes away from the books and looked at me. "About a week?" I answered more like a question. "A week? That long?" Lauren asked. "What? Huh? I was thinking you were going to say it was too short." I felt hurt a little.
