Katrina was a killer; this thing was an end to all.
With everything in me I jumped to my left and fell face first and rolled hoping without hope to get away from it with my eyes closed tight.
I threw myself to the side, a careless, awkward jump, landing with a bad sound on my side, the hit shaking up my back and into my head. The force carried me into a wild, clumsy roll. The ground rubbed hard against my cheek and shoulder, a rough, comforting real thing compared to the not real of the whirling column. I pushed my eyelids together so tight that spots moved behind them, a last, urgent try to not see the horror, to make it go away through pure refusal to look. Please. Be gone. Just be gone. I
