The softness of each page with its hardened exterior sent a warmth through my body that no human could ever provide me. It’s been so long since I was able to actually hold a book like this in my hands; the astronomy book that Bob had given me to study was alright. It was better than nothing, but it didn’t give me that same sense of purpose and mystery as a book with a story does. Transporting my brain somewhere different; somewhere peaceful; somewhere that change is possible, and no dream is too big.

Isn't it natural for me to ask? After the taxi arrived in front of the bookstore, I entered the store and drowned myself among the shelves filled with books. I bought novels in random genres. Reading novels makes me feel like I am entering another world where I can feel what the main character is going through. It was quite fun; I could forget my troubles for a while. I fell when someone bumped into me. All the books I was holding were scattered on the floor. Come on, doesn't he see that this place is quite wide? Does it make sense to bump into someone in such a large place?

she turned away from me again, running her fingers down the spines of a few water-warped novels. You. "The one behind my desk," I answered. "It's my favorite." Evelyn looked over my desk at the worn down novel, the years and years of use made it delicate. She stroked a gentle finger over the cover. "It looks well-loved." "Do you have a favorite book, Evelyn?" I asked, leaning back at the table, our dirty dishes stacked neatly, ready for a cabin boy to take them away in the morning. She glanced at me from over her shoulder, a smile pulling on the corners of her lips. A devious smirk that screamed indignance. "I do. It's called, 'The Art of Profanity'."

Her cathedral. She slouched into her best corner chair—stuffed, tufted velvet in tired blue—pullding out a book from her tote. A quiet night's reading before bed was now her ritual, and for tonight, she opened what was familiar and comforting: *The Light Between Oceans*. The book always bore its imprint on her. Loss. Forgiveness. Breaking and binding decisions. She opened to the top of it, and the world disintegrated. Somewhere in the city—several stories above, in a steel and glass building—Julian Blackwood lay in his dark, sleek bedroom, staring at the book she had given him.

The usual genres one would expect to find at a book fair, too: history, fiction, non-fiction, folklore, fantasy, fairytales… everything. I had wondered and hoped that I could find the fiction book about the female alpha, but there was nothing of the sort to be found. I would rummage through the boxes each day, hoping to find something, but nothing. Nothing at all. Picking up a large pile of books from a box, I strolled towards a table that was getting empty to fill it up again.

The History of Literary Criticism. "Huh," I laugh. No wonder it's never been read. It sounds incredibly boring. It's so beautiful, though, that I can't resist pulling it down off the shelf and carefully flipping open the cover. And that's when I understand why this book is different. It's not a book at all - at least not a functional one. All of the pages have been glued together, and a block has been carved out of the middle, making a perfect little nook in which to conceal something. There's something inside - a small, roughly rectangular bundle wrapped in plain cloth.

I replied, shaking his hand briefly before pulling it back, a tingle left in its place. “So, Kalia, what’s so captivating in that book of yours that you almost missed the best coffee in town?” He nodded toward my cup. I tilted my head, considering him. “You are assuming I don’t already know that this place has the best coffee.” He raised an eyebrow. “Fair enough. But now I’m curious about the book.” I held it up, the cover facing him. “It’s a mystery novel. Keeps me on my toes.” He leaned in slightly, intrigued. “A mystery, huh? So, you like solving puzzles?”

Help yourself to one of those. ‘You mean read?’ ‘That is what people usually do with books.’ With a short sigh of impatience, Theodore wandered over to examine the neat rows of titles which lined an entire wall of her sitting room. The only things he ever read were financial papers or contracts, or business-related articles he caught up with when he was travelling. Occasionally his attention would be caught by some glossy car magazine, which would lure him into changing his latest model for something even more powerful. But he never read books. She slid instead toward the back—past biographies, past religion like a polite nod to an old neighbor, into the cool belly of fiction. The store had been designed by someone who loved introverts: a few deep armchairs tucked in half-shadow at the end of a long aisle, lamps that glowed like patient moons. She claimed the chair at the far corner, where the shelves made a narrow canyon and you could see trouble coming long enough to close the book and pretend you’d been reading a different life all along.
