I blinked, confused, until I realized the source, it was the living book. A strange light had begun to seep through my gown, glowing brighter with each passing second. It pulsed against my chest like a heartbeat.
I quickly pulled it out, holding it with both hands. The book trembled in my grasp, the pages fluttering though there was no breeze. Its light brighter, fiercer, wilder than ever before.
The woman’s eyes widened. Without hesitation, she reached out. Her fingers touched the cover before I could stop her.
