Marcus turned toward me sharply. “You can hear them now? Without it being opened?”
I nodded, not entirely sure how to explain it beyond the simple fact of it.
“Then perhaps,” Marcus said slowly, “you can read it.”
“If you cannot read it,” Dominic said, and there was something in his voice I couldn’t quite name, not cruelty, but a pointed kind of practicality, “what makes you believe she can?”
“The language in that book has resisted every attempt at translation,” Marcus said. “By scholars, by seers, by three different categories of gifted wolves. None of them could hear anything without the book being opened. She hears it closed.” He looked at me. “That is not coincidence.”
