The question made Pamela turn round. ‘It’s my book club.’ ‘Your book club?’ ‘Six to eight women,’ she explained, since he’d clearly never heard of the concept. ‘We all read a book and then afterwards we sit round and discuss it.’ He knitted his brows together. ‘And that’s supposed to be enjoyable?’ ‘That’s the general idea.’ ‘Cancel it.’ The answering smile he floated her was supremely confident. ‘Have dinner with me instead.’

“It’s pretty wild. You’re in for an interesting night.” Luna grabs another copy of the book from a nearby stack and hands it to me. “Here you go. This one’s a fresh copy, we have plenty. You’ll see why in a minute.” I take the book, glancing between them. “You’ve actually got extras? What kind of book club is this?” Lilly grins mischievously. “One that takes its material seriously. We didn’t just pick this one by chance. We’ve been swapping theories about it for weeks now. Everyone’s dying to hear your take.”

I can't imagine spending time with him outside the hospital; I'd be too awed to speak. "All right, ladies!" Cindy taps a spoon against her glass to get our attention. "We're a book club, so we need to at least look like we're talking about this week's read." She reaches down to take a hardback book out of her bright pink beach bag. "Elin Hilderbrand's The Rumor-so much to unpack here. Who wants to start?" When none of us say a word, Cindy heaves a loud sigh. "Okay, children. I see you're going to make me work for this one. She doesn't even wait for me to get out before opening her door and standing tall, looking at the front of the club with curiosity. “You look disappointed.” She glances at me as if surprised I called her out for the emotion visible on her face and lifts a shoulder. “I expected more, I guess.” That seems like a reasonable enough response, and I know it in my head. Club Red may not look like much on the outside, but that is a dangerous stance to take because the club isn’t about what's going on at the facade, it's about what's happening within. “Always dangerous to judge a book by its cover.”
