The ache in my heart turns to butterflies in my belly. There’s a rickety stool outside the den with a book sitting on it, a paperback that’s gotten soaked and dried at least once, opened like a fan. A bookmark made of braided grass is tucked between the pages. He reads? What is he reading? My wolf can’t read. All she can do to satisfy my curiosity is sniff the pages. They smell like they’ve been dew-dampened and baked in the sunshine many, many times. She bumps it off the chair with her enthusiasm, and Justus rescues it from the ground.

Rearranging the books, I found a small brown book wedged behind them, but it didn’t have a title or seem to belong to the library. While putting the library books up, I took the unmarked book and opened the cover to see if something was inside to help me figure out where the book went. The cover had nothing, so I flipped the page and saw it was a journal. The handwriting looked familiar as if I had seen it before. Flipping the pages, I skimmed the contents and saw that it discussed microchips. It was also about changed wolves. I took the book to the loft to find out if it was related to the same thing I wanted to create.

he was still as cocky as ever, typical Beta. After he said that no bumps would appear because the book seemed light, he took it. We both stared at the book that appeared to be a journal. We gave each other a curious look. Why would there be a journal on the shelves of the encyclopedia at the library? I knew it was wrong to look through someone else's diary, but my curiosity got the best of me. I took the journal from Ace and started to flip through it. The journal seemed old; the pages of the book were turning brown. There were liquid stains on some of the pages too. The diary was well organized, there were no lines, but the entries were styled.

I was hoping to see something else. Sucking my teeth, I was about to close the safe when something caught my eye. It was a small brown leather-bound book tucked into the corner and wedged tightly between the stacks of bills. Curiosity burned through me, and I pulled it out. The gold lettering on the front read Lila’s Journal. “Bingo.” I opened the book and flipped through the pages. Lila’s handwriting was neat and precise. I could tell this was a glimpse into her private thoughts and her innermost secrets.

After a solid minute of demanding attention, the sound of a key in the lock finally reached his ears. “Stop that bellowing and pounding,” grumbled a guard as he opened a small, slotted peephole in the door. Disappointed that the door wasn’t actually opened, Jasper peered through the hole. Doing his best to keep his voice level and calm, he said, “I would like a take note of what’s happening to my body for my research. I need a notebook.” The guard tossed his head back in full bellied laughter as he said, “You think you’ll live long enough to use them?”

Ethan placed a hand on the book, his expression solemn. “This belonged to Arlene,” he said. “Her memories, her knowledge, it’s all here.” I reached out, my fingers trembling slightly as I traced the embossed crescent moon. The journal felt alive beneath my touch, as though it carried the weight of Arlene’s soul. When I opened it, the pages were filled with elegant, looping handwriting, and the ink faded but was still legible. As I read, the room around me seemed to fade away, replaced by a vivid vision that overtook my senses entirely.

Just occupying my own body without apologizing for the space it took up. At a small bookshop on the corner I stopped on impulse and went in. The smell of paper and ink and warm indoor air folded around me immediately. I moved between the shelves slowly, reading titles with genuine curiosity, picking things up and putting them down and picking up other things, with no sense of hurrying or having to justify the time. Eventually I chose a plain-covered journal and carried it to the counter. The cashier smiled. "New project?" "Something like that," I said. "Yes."

Should anything weird happen to me one day, I hope this book will find its way to you and help solve the riddles around my situation.
