Just her even breathing, the soft rhythm filling the quiet room. My eyes wandered around her space. It wasn’t overly feminine, but it was hers. There were a few candles on the nightstand, a pile of books stacked near the lamp—one of them open with a bookmark halfway through. I smiled faintly. Of course she’d been reading before dinner. She was always reading something. On her dresser, I noticed a framed photo—one I hadn’t seen before. It was her and her friends, all smiling wide, faces lit with laughter. She was in the middle, her smile the brightest.

Calla’s Daughter – POV The bookstore smelled like paper and rain. Not a chain store. Not polished shelves or corporate signs. Just an old converted train depot with crooked floorboards and a chalkboard outside that read: “Tonight: The Girl in the Photograph – A Reading.” I almost didn’t show up. Even though I was the girl. Even though I’d written the book. Even though River had flown in, Melinda was already seated in the front row, and Carrie had helped organize the entire thing with a thousand checklists and two backup microphones.

She stood on tiptoe, took that book off the third shelf, and seriously flipped through it. In the book, there is a photo of a man and a woman, the two of them embracing each other sweetly and closely, the blue eyes filled with the love of an extremely outstanding woman, with an extremely beautiful appearance.

She looked at the book in her hand and went back to the shelf, before putting it back she opened it for once. It was a photo book, Chloe have seen Dave's childhood pictures knew before. From the very first glance, she knew it was Dave's pictures from when his parents were still alive, it was a family picture book. Thinking it of something that can't be used, she put it back. But a few pictures fell from the book, she picked them up. She noticed a picture, Dave was standing with a boy looking a little older than him, must be some friend, thinking, she ignored the picture and went back to the desk. she could hear the maid knocking on her door.

Mia wandered through the aisles checking titles against the list on her phone, occasionally stopping to pick up a book and study the back cover. I let her browse and drifted through the shelves on my own. I did that for twenty minutes while Mia assembled her stack, moving through the shelves slowly, picking things up and putting them down. I found a large photography book, with hardcover volume, filled with portraits of women from different decades. I hadn't intended to stop, but I opened it anyway and found myself standing in the aisle, turning pages and studying the faces. Some of the photographs were old, others recent. Some of the women were famous; most were not. What connected them was

"This is the place." But why was I dreaming about it? And why did that photo of the man and little girl feel so familiar? I kept flipping through the pages, looking for any kind of explanation. Most of the photos didn't have captions, just dates. But then, near the back of the book, I found something that made my hands shake. A page with a longer description underneath some photos.

“But what if it has secrets? Grown-up secrets. Like… like where she hides the cookies.” Elias grinned and flopped onto the bed, opening the book without hesitation. “Then let’s find out.” The first few pages were filled with Lisa’s neat handwriting, but what really caught their attention were the photos tucked between the pages. One slipped free and fluttered to the floor. Lyra picked it up carefully. The photo showed a man with sharp, regal features and piercing eyes. Elias leaned over her shoulder. “Whoa. Who’s that?” Aria plucked another from the book—this one of a man with a softer smile but the same unmistakable strength in his build. Then another photo appeared, and another.

"Please stop." "Do you have any pictures of him as a kid?" I ask, unable to help myself. "I'd love to see them." Carol grins. "I do! Niko didn't let us bring our phones, so I brought the album instead." She digs into her oversized purse and pulls out a little hardcover book, worn around the edges from love and years of page turns. She opens it to the first photo—baby Niko wrapped in a yellow blanket, thick dark hair sticking up in wild little tufts.

Resting on the bookshelf. It hadn’t been there before. August stood slowly. Reached for it. The frame was old scratched corners, like it had been handled too many times. Inside was a photo of two boys, barely ten years old. One of them was unmistakably August. Younger, thinner, eyes wide, smile forced. The other boy stood beside him. Slightly shorter. Dark haired. Looking straight at the camera with an expression August could only describe as possessive. The caption scrawled beneath, in childlike handwriting, read:

"He really thought he could play me. Poor guy didn’t stand a chance." As my hand moved to close the safe, something else caught my eye, a book tucked into the corner. Unlike the others, this one was bound in smooth black leather, its edges worn from use. Intrigued, I pulled it out, but as I did, several photographs slipped from its pages, scattering to the floor. "Well, what do we have here?" Morana mused, her curiosity mirroring mine. I knelt, picking up the first photograph. It showed a stunning woman with dark hair and piercing eyes, her smile soft yet enigmatic. There was something eerily familiar about her, but I couldn’t quite place it.
