The worry isn’t about a 10-book lore bible; it’s whether the chemistry between the leads feels forced by page three. The whole ‘what to read next’ decision is less of a puzzle and more of a gut reaction, which is a relief sometimes.

Reading books to boost vocabulary quickly is less about specific titles and more about method. I found academic journals and 19th-century novels were a real grind, honestly. The old-fashioned prose in something like 'Middlemarch' is packed with Latinate words, but I'd argue you need a strategy to actually retain them. Without looking things up and using them, you just glaze over.

I had better luck with modern literary fiction—authors like Zadie Smith or David Foster Wallace. They use a wild range of language naturally in a contemporary context. 'White Teeth' threw 'sanguine' and 'quotidian' at me in ways that stuck because the story was so alive. It felt less like studying and more like absorbing a culture of words through narrative osmosis. A notebook beside me for unfamiliar terms made all the difference.

The whole "beginners need simple books" idea seems misleading. Difficulty isn't just about vocabulary; it's about how a story holds your attention. Ignore gatekeeping about what 'counts' as a proper book, too. Graphic novels, compelling non-fiction about a hobby, even well-written fanfic can build the reading muscle. The goal is to finish something and feel that click, not to check a box on a literary ladder.
