He shook her from his mind and pushed open the doors to the study. The rug-lined room was bigger than B’s above-garage apartment. I barely remembered locking the office, let alone where I shoved the notebook before leaving. My fingers trail over the desk meeting nothing, I kneel to check the lower cabinet, still nothing, the bookshelf is next. One by one, I pull books from the shelves, dust floating lazily through the afternoon sunlight, I check behind every row before replacing them, still nothing. My heartbeat quickens, that notebook isn't something I can afford to lose ‘cause anyone who found it would think it was just another collection of scribbled observations. It isn't. It contains fragments of everything people desperately want buried, I always knew everyone saw me as the fool.

Books rested on the surface in uneven stacks, their edges worn. She stepped inside carefully. Her footsteps felt quieter here. Absorbed by something softer than metal. Fabric. Wood. Materials chosen for comfort rather than durability. She ran her fingers lightly across the desk. Dust lifted slightly beneath her touch. Not abandoned. Preserved. That distinction returned again.
