He looked up when I walked in, and his face lit up. “You came.” “You asked.” He smiled. “That’s what you used to say to him, isn’t it?” I froze. “How did you—?” “I read your book, Ava. The first one. The one about the girl who loses everything.” He set down his book. “I figured it out. The ex‑boyfriend. The best friend. The betrayal.” I sat down across from him, my heart pounding. “And you still wanted to have coffee with me?”

I opened the file and smiled. Olivia had booked me for a weekend getaway.

“You're so brilliant, do you know that?” A small gasp escaped her lips as she looked up, surprised. I grinned, loving the way her cheeks always flushed whenever I complimented her. She was such a beautiful lady. Modest. She was amazing, and I could never have a much better best friend.

“But look on the bright side, those guys are totally checking you out.” I scoffed. As if. They had eyes only for her and definitely not me. Where Siobhan is I am just a shadow. He could ignore him, his appearance demanded attention, but wasn't he too fast? I mean so far I only made one friend, Kriti. No doubt I loved having her by my side but having one friend seemed too less. I wanted more.

“Anything for my bestie.” I’ve never felt so relieved to have a lawyer as a best friend. She says taking my glasses off my face and stepping on them. Her friend shrugs, “She made you look like a fool.” She giggles, blowing her freshly painted pink nails.” Pink is an overrated color if you ask me. Raquel snatches my book from me, maintaining eye contact. “And on top of it my best friend is angry. That’s not your fault but you’re going to pay for it.” And there goes my novel, she tosses it in the toilet. Brat. Tee would have fun with this one and so would the old Camilla.

I think we were running off pure adrenaline by the end of it. I chuckled, but my eyes slid to Allison, and there was a worried furrow in my brow. "Sounds like you two have had quite the adventure," I said. Hannah grinned. "Definitely. Allison is my rock. I don't know what I'd do without her. Allison's flush deepened. She was grateful and full of guilt at Hannah's praise, relieved she had her support, but at the same time, sickeningly reminded of the secret she kept from her best friend. She glanced across me, I returned a small, encouraging smile.
