I press my hand to him, trying to get him to stay still. “I can help,” I murmur, fumbling with the heavy book in my lap. He pauses, eyes darting to the old book. His gaze hardens in suspicion but then softens. He recognizes what it is. I flip frantically through the brittle pages. 39… 91… 180… Focus. My fingers finally find the right page and relief washes over me when I spot the illustrations. I place the book next to me and take the bag, searching for the right leaves stuffy stuff. I do not know what. At least the book has pictures in color.

He shook her from his mind and pushed open the doors to the study. The rug-lined room was bigger than B’s above-garage apartment. Floor to ceiling bookshelves dampened any noise B might made in his whiskey search. There didn’t seem to be a single inch of space on any one of the shelves. Books of all colors, textures, and sizes were packed together. In front of the book spines sat hundreds of little treasures–seashells, pocket watches, glass figurines, and carvings of creatures. So many creatures. B let his fingers drift over the book spines: The Picture of Dorian Gray. The Catcher in the Rye. The Odyssey. Brave New World. The Call of the Wild. White Noise. So many stories he’d never read and

When my shift ended, I found myself walking toward the corner table where Kael sat, his laptop closed now, a book in his hands. I stopped short when I saw the cover. ‘Knot We Cannot Untie.’ That was the book he was holding. I can't believe that Kael would be reading one of Linda Lively’s books. “You read… this?” I said, the surprise evidently in my voice. Kael looked up, one brow raised. “Why? You think I only read racing magazines and bank statements?” I gave a small laugh. “Chill bro. It’s just… not what I was expecting ”

“I would leave now, if you need me, you can always reach out.” “Thank you,” I said happily. She nodded and quietly left the room. I walked slowly between the shelves. The books looked old. Some of them looked very old. The smell of old paper filled the air. “Wow,” I whispered again. I ran my fingers along the books. “History… mythology… politics…” Then something caught my eye, a large photo album sat on a lower shelf. I picked it up and sat down on a chair. When I opened it, the first photo made me pause, a man stood in a black suit.

She lunged for the book, but he kept moving swiftly, dodging her. “Oh, settle down, love. All I want is to see what you’re–” Brendan’s speech came to a sudden halt when he opened her notebook and saw the picture. He grabbed hold of the picture and dropped the notebook. Suki’s heart thudded hard in her chest. “Brendan, wait…” “What the fuck is this?” He looked at her in disgust. “Why do you have this?” “It’s…just a picture of a cool painting I found. Why? What is it?” Suki asked, holding her breath.

I downloaded the photo and hid it in a folder on my phone, then deleted the text. In the photo, I was clearly in one of the bathrooms at school. The puke green tiles were on the wall behind me with a clear view of the industrial-style sink. If one of the deans or principal saw this picture, I'd be suspended, maybe even expelled from school. The photo was a close up of my face and chest, covered in a thick liquid. I was on my knees. They say a picture says a thousand words. I could think of one hundred of those words right off the top of my head. Stupid.

Brayden looked up from his computer and across the room at Meredith. “Greta, have a seat on the couch. I’m almost finished with this.” He told her and then continued to type away at something. Meredith took a moment to look at the books on the bookshelf. There were mostly business book and biographies or books inspiring greatness lining the wall. She noticed one book was displayed next to a framed photo. The photo was a woman that looked a lot like Brayden and a boy about ten years old who looked like a younger version of Brayden. She assumed it must be Brayden and his mother. The book that was displayed on a stand next to the photo was Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

The shadows grew darker and the light got dimmer, just enough left so I could read off of the book. I turn the pages and my eyes caught a figure of a woman that looked like me, with exact features and everything. It seemed like someone drew the portrait and stick it in the book similar to a bookmark. I was baffled and I started to read what was written on the pages that were marked with my picture.

I said, “What book?” he asked, “All of them.” He looked extremely puzzled by this request but he simply nodded and left to carry out my wish. I wasn’t sure of what the exact book was but I knew I would recognize it if I saw it and I did when he brought them in. It had a purple hard cover back with the picture of a lily printed on it. She had looked so intrigued by it when she was reading it and I could tell that she loved it given how much she fought to have it.
