I said, walking carefully around the room, studying her. The book she held in her hand looked like a romance that my mother read when I was small. She didn't move when my shadow fell over her, but jumped up when I snagged the book from her grasp. "Hey!" she shouted, jumping to reach it above my head. I turned my back toward her, and smiled at the page. "Reading smut, just as I thought," I said, lowering it so she could cradle it to her chest. "It's not smut. It's romance," she said, closing the book. "Not that I expect you to understand romance."

So I dealt with the heat alone until it passed. Even remembering it now makes my jaw tighten. Lost in thought, I don’t notice where I’m going. I walk straight into someone. The impact makes me stumble back, and the book slips from my hands, falling to the ground. “Oh—I’m sorry. I didn’t see you,” I say quickly, already bending down to pick it up. I'm just leaving the garden after reading. The novel in my hands has completely pulled me in these past few days. It is a romance story, it's full of devotion, softness, the kind of love that chooses you and stays.

“What should we do first? Maybe explore the backyard? Or we could find a game?” Esme was silent for a long moment, her little brow furrowed in thought.
