"We would all be doomed if that devil becomes the emperor," the slave woman in the cell next to his mutters in an equally fearful voice. "We are doomed no matter who the crown chooses. All of King Roderick's sons are monsters," I say.

For a long while, that was the only sound. "Thalia." Cassius’s voice sliced through the calm. I turned. His stillness was a magnet, drawing my attention. He stood before a shelf, holding a heavy, dark-green volume as if it were a fragile relic. He carried it to the central desk and laid it gently in the pool of candlelight. The Lost Kingdom of Aelindoria. The title seemed to hum with promise, but Cassius’s gaze was fixed on the book's edge. His fingers traced the gilded trim of the cover, and then I saw it: the corner of a cream-colored envelope, hidden between the pages.

I continued. Cassandra nodded and tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear. “I also heard that the king had a private conversation with you,” I said. Cassandra stopped what she was doing and raised her eyes to meet mine. “Yes,” she said. “He did” I waited for her to elaborate, but when she didn’t, I decided I needed to pry a little bit more. Why wasn’t she sharing any of this with me? Did she really trust me so little and the king of Yurene so much? Why was she being so coy?

Even Cassian didn't seem to believe what he just heard. He shook his head, bit his lip and then slightly tilted his head as he looked at me. "I must've heard you wrong, because what I heard is that you want to read me a bedtime story,” he commented with his eyes still transfixed on me. "That's exactly what I said,” I responded as I waved the book in the air. “I don't know if you've read this book about the king who had everything he could have wished for, except for a soul,” I added as I showed him the cover.

Now the entire kingdom could burn politely without them for a few hours. Adrian shifted slightly, sinking deeper into Cassian’s chest. Cassian immediately adjusted with him, like it was instinct. “Read to me,” Cassian said suddenly. Adrian blinked. “You’re holding a book.” “I know.” “You’re literally reading your own book.” Cassian turned a page without shame. “Yours is more interesting.” Adrian glanced down at the cover of his own book. A ridiculous romance novel he had picked up out of boredom and then never put down.
