Alie The invitation says Conversation on Story: Building Worlds for Real Life which is the kind of title that makes you feel smart while you drink tea out of a paper cup and pretend the folding chair isn’t a folding chair. The bookstore is small, all honeyed wood and lamps that try to be kind. Someone strung twinkle lights between nonfiction and essays, like stars got cozy in the ceiling.

Her eyes brightened at the sight of the books. “Good morning, dear. Any recommendations for a book to curl up with?” she asked, voice warm but tinged with hesitation. I folded my novel shut and looked up, offering her the practiced smile that hid the iron beneath. “Depends on what you like. Something light? Something dark?” She hesitated, then said, “Dark, but with hope.” I tapped a book nearby, The Night Circus. “This one weaves mystery and magic, but underneath, it’s a story about trust and power.”

"We can’t stay here watching everyone turn their backs on us for no reason. I don’t care if that means being alone with him. I’d rather that than be surrounded by people who judge without knowing." Bright looked at me with something I couldn’t quite identify in that moment, maybe gratitude, or a hint of relief. Maybe both. My mother slowly nodded and walked away down the hallway without another word. Once she was gone, I turned to him. Bright was still standing, as if he couldn’t quite believe what he’d just heard. "We’re going to our house, Bright," I told him. "To ours. Where we can breathe without being judged. Where you can heal." "Are you sure?"

Maya takes a seat opposite us. “What happened hereel, Mr Bright? Why is everywhere so dull and quiet? It's unlike before.” I ask. “Hmm,” he puffed out a long sad breath. “Ever since you've left, the bookshop has become so lonely, no one to manage it. We tried getting someone to manage it but they couldn't handle it well. So we lost a lot of customers and people stopped coming. I couldn't handle all of it on my own.” He said with a sad smile.
