Next week I will have another scan to check the baby’s growth. I wished with all my heart that everything would be fine. After a few minutes, I was leisurely walking down the streets, enjoying the warm sunlight and soft breeze. It felt refreshing. After walking for a while, I had no idea why I ended up slowing down in front of a bookstore. My gaze lingered on the display window for a moment, stopping at one specific book. “Little Bear Loves His Mama the Most.” The title of the book, with its light blue hardcover and beautiful illustrations, made me stare at it for a long time.

“Haven’t you said it before?” “Yes, but maybe they don’t remember and reading this will make them understand this book better. So yes,” She is suddenly facing the wall beside her, “I want you guys to read the first book. ‘Asteria: The Fey King’s Mate’. It’s exclusively on N******t, so I couldn’t upload it here. I am sorry for that, I really am but this will make you understand a lot of things better and I hope you like it.”

A file titled “Who Was I Before You?” My pulse kicks up. Is Viola also a fan of the book? I step closer. And then I see it. Character profiles. Development notes. Unreleased chapters. I don’t move. I don’t even breathe. My brain pieces it together faster than I can process it. Viola is Shortstuff002. She wrote Who Was I Before You? The book I’ve been addicted to for months. The book I couldn’t stop thinking about. The book that felt so familiar. The book that, deep down, felt like her.

He really isn't one to show how he feels, he likes to bottle them inside. I sighed as I leaned on the couch, blanket still around me, switching on the television. I swiped to the N*****x station deciding to watch an animation to pass time. I chose Red Panda as it's been out for sometime and has also been on my watchlist. What better time to get lost in cartoons than after a heartbreak, right? I shrugged the blanket off my shoulders and made a move to the kitchen to get a tub of strawberry ice cream and a spoon. I come back and situate myself, legs tucked in and play the movie.

I locked eyes with big blue orbs that stared back at me. “Yes, baby?” “You haven’t chosen one?” She asked and bounced her legs softly. I nodded and ran my eyes over the titles on the card and I continued reading, I gradually realized that they weren’t just titles, they were a list of my favorite books. “Choose one!” “Um,” I pulled myself out of my thoughts and smiled at her. “I think I will go for um, Me before you. That one that, um, number three.” I rushed out because my daughter looked intimidating when she was frustrated or annoyed. Moore like her father.

I find it more of a comfort, I suppose I am a creature of the dark, therefore I am more accustomed to it. I return to her, watching as her fingers mindlessly reach for another book on her stack, but she is an inch short. I reach out, handing it to her. I admit I feel at home there, back in her vicinity. She takes it, and I examine the books she packs through. I pick one up and ponder which section of the library she is working on. Ah, "The Time Before," the full account of Alexander's rule. The abundance and all that came before the Mages Curse. Before all death fell forward, before chaos, before Loss, before the emblems of war.
