Having wrestled with the concept of slavery after many of his close friends became sympathizers, James Moore poured over their matters of estate to see how he might possibly follow the examples of his friends and work the plantation with paid labor instead of slaves. Unfortunately, at the time his father was considering this, their matters were not in order sufficiently to support such a shift. Twisted inside, James turned to the church for answers. After several days of praying on the topic, the chapel priest presented him with the passage of scriptures – Leviticus 25.44 –
