Kendra sat in the library with the book, The Hobbit, opened on her lap. When Rex had first shown the room that was lined with books to her, she’d been both intimidated and overwhelmed. She was taught to read by Olga, but the availability of reading material was limited. Therefore, her reading skills were wanting.

Kendra twisted in the saddle so that she could better see the trail behind her. She and Rex had left their home at dawn on their hunting trip to a new and unexplored area. Interestingly enough, the grounds were lush with plant life in comparison to most of the areas that they’d been hunting in, yet there was absolutely no game to be found. At first, they’d thought that it might be due to an abundance of zombies about, but they’d yet to come across a single one of them.

Only time would tell. They’d travel far enough without signs of the a****n women in pursuit of Kendra that they felt it was safe to let the horses have a small rest. They’d just settled next to a narrow brook and were watering them when the familiar guttural sounds of zombies communicating with each other as they made their way toward them reached their ears.

When my shift ended, I found myself walking toward the corner table where Kael sat, his laptop closed now, a book in his hands. I stopped short when I saw the cover. ‘Knot We Cannot Untie.’ That was the book he was holding. I can't believe that Kael would be reading one of Linda Lively’s books. “You read… this?” I said, the surprise evidently in my voice. Kael looked up, one brow raised. “Why? You think I only read racing magazines and bank statements?” I gave a small laugh. “Chill bro. It’s just… not what I was expecting ”

Amanda said quickly. “All right. You should go to Kansas City. Hannah will be there whether I am or not. That’s where the book is.... It’s probably better than here.” She thought about the fact that Holland wanted her and Cass more than anything. She would attack sooner or later. Amanda didn’t need to be here for that. “Do you think the portal will reopen where you are now?”
