“That was before I realized the meeting wasn’t real.” He lifted one shoulder. “And now we’re here.” “Yes,” I said, standing. “Now we’re here.” Vegas. The City of chaos and bad decisions. I stared out the hotel window at the neon lights blazing across the strip. Then a thought slowly crept into my head. “What is Vegas good for?” I muttered. Elion looked up. “I’m afraid to answer that.” “Clubs,” I said thoughtfully. He blinked. “Casinos.” He lowered the tablet.

“But what happened in Vegas wasn't our fault.” “It wouldn't have happened if we had stayed at home too.” “Fine. Where is the safest place we can visit here? I am bored staying here.” “Hmm.” Blakeley muttered and thought about it. She wasn't really familiar with the urban areas of the city but she knew a few thanks to Malia.” “A less boring place.” Cassie added. “There is a casino that runs 24/7 and it isn't really far from the hotel.” “What kind of stuff goes on in there? Legal or illegal?”

Jared asked from the SUV’s driver’s seat. I kept my eyes focused on the twinkling lights of Brille. Its noise and bustle in the middle of the night were a huge change from the serenity of Embercrest. The city never sleeps. Skyscrapers pitched on each side of the street operated twenty-four hours, housing the grandiose casino where humans squandered millions each second. “Seth invited me,” I murmured, thumbing over the cufflinks of my white dress shirt. “I didn’t invite myself to this loud city.”

"What about Vegas? Did you get to see the sights? Meet any interesting people?" I fiddled with the edge of her blanket. "Not really. Mostly stuck in meetings about the new development project. Spreadsheets and blueprints don't leave much time for fun." "Oh, come on," Hazel groaned. "You were in Sin City, and all you did was work?" I smiled, remembering the casino floor. "I did try my hand at blackjack. Actually, won a decent amount." I twisted a strand of hair around my finger, hoping they wouldn't press for details about exactly how much - or who taught me.

Atlas. The boys. Bastian and Bjorn. The people disappearing. The people dying. The world suddenly felt much larger than it had a few months ago. And much more dangerous. That night, after Mel went to bed, I opened my mother's journal again. The fire had burned low. The bakery sat quiet beneath us. And as I turned the next page, I couldn't shake the feeling that whatever answers I needed were waiting somewhere ahead. I leaned back in my leather chair, the amber liquid in my glass catching the glow of the city. I had spent a decade carving my name into the marrow of this desert. I had crushed the syndicates, bought the politicians, and silenced the dissenters. Now, there was nothing left but the quiet.

He yelled, and I cringed at how angry he was. "Hey, man, chillax," Liam said calmly to his twin. "I don't know where the hell you hear that from. Don't ever ask about that again," Logan's voice went lower but still angry. I braced myself and took the courage to ask him. "Then what about the book." "What book?" He says in confusion as anger contorted the features of his face. "Your book of names of all the girls you've been in with? They have the start to the end dates next to their names. That book." I look straight into his eyes. "Tell me, Logan. Is my name in the book?"

Book 2: Unraveled, 7 Deadly Sins: Gluttony Montana I hate Las Vegas, and I hate girls’ trips. How stupid must I be? “Let’s fly to Vegas for two days. It’ll be fun! Just us girls shopping, eating, gambling, and dancing.” I spoke those words. How innocent I thought their meaning to be. Our other girls’ trips were fun. We let loose, we partied, and we returned to Iowa prepared to resume our daily lives.
