"Okay. Let’s go read some poems." I carry her down the corridor to her room and lay her carefully on the bed. She pulls the blanket up to her chin and yawns, loud enough to tell me she’s already sleepy. "Daddy, I want the dragons and the musketeers. Can you read that one for me?" "The dragons and the musketeers? That’s a weird combination." She just stares at me with those big eyes. I’m not winning this argument. "Okay, little lion." I walk over to her tiny pink bookshelf and scan the spines until I find a hardcover with a dragon on the front and three little stick figures holding swords.

Inside: Not yet. I began scanning the shelves. Titles of all kinds filled the aisles. My hand slid across the spines at my eye level. A hard-covered green book smelling faintly of old paper drew my attention: The Origin of Elemental Sorcery. Then another—its gold embossed symbols of the four elements shimmering under the light: A History of Ignith, Hydros, Terragaia, and Glacius. Moving to the next shelf, I spotted a worn leather-bound book, edges frayed from overuse: Hybrid Wolves with Magical Signatures. And a thin one compared to the rest: The Forbidden Transition Between Elements.

Every story has a beginning, some good, some bad, mine has never been a happy one, no matter who, or how I tell it, nobody will believe me. I can't rely on the people in my life, My parents ignore me, or are cruel to me, my friends are unreliable, and aren't trustworthy either. So what happens when I turn 16 years old, and run away from my problems to another world, only to find myself in the same magical world I played make belief in as a kid? With heartbreak at every turn, and a possible new relationship on the horizon, what could possibly go wrong in this world that hasn't happened to me on Earth?!

I almost shove it back. I hate everything that has to do with dragons now. Everything about them reminds me of things I would rather forget, bonds I would rather pretend never existed. But something stops me. Tiny lettering at the very bottom of the spine catches my eye. Blue fire. My pulse stutters. I pull the book out slowly and flip it open. The pages are old. Fragile. The first image nearly knocks the air out of my lungs.

At least I hope she won't. Right now she's crooning at the thought of being near Leviathan. She finds him fascinating. They are both mythical creatures and incredibly powerful. However, they are opposites! It won't work. Whoever said 'opposites attract' didn't have to deal with a freaking horny firebird and a water dragon who wants nothing to do with them! (Actually, I haven't talked to him. I've only talked to Levi... But I'm guessing they are on the same page since they are one being.)

I opened it and noticed the printing was only on a few pages it was no longer blank like it was earlier, maybe magic decided I needed to read the red one first. I shrugged as I sat back down and read the four pages that were available. they all basically said that dragons can be born from humans but if they are from an egg that the mother decides when the egg hatches. If they want a dragonkin in the near future it can be done but if they want to wait? well it says mother can keep that egg safe without every worrying if it will spontaneously hatch. I did find a small paragraph on female dragons that said they are celestial beings and the male dragon only has to wish upon a star and his dragon

She responded without moving, and in the same mood as mine. I do not know what she meant by those words of hers; was it that his father did not actually read it, or was it the fact that these poetic lyrics of freedom and history inscribed in this book is ought to mislead people? I wondered as certain words from the book overlapped in my mind; dragons, enemy, slay, love, harmony, and peace. I read it myself, and I can’t even keep my stomach from turning from the detail that it never mentioned dragons being the first rulers of this world. And they knew us as some hollow and untamed creatures that wreck people’s houses and destroy their rich lands.

The stack of books were all about magic. “Magus: Basic Structures Of Magic Circles” “Gifts Granted By God” “Divine Magic And Belief” “Elemental Resonance Between Magic And Science” “Advanced Guide to Magic” were some of the titles among others. Rose’s objective was to master at least a few high tier magic for the upcoming fight.
