I draped her pancakes with honey and dropped it on the table right in front of her, serving it with a glass of milk, after which I went back to the kitchen and had mine with a cup of hot chocolate. No one was at the hospital when I got there, and luckily for me, I brought a book along, so I sat right beside the bed and started reading the book. The book was “ My Father's Wish” by Bellaboy, a touching story of how a young man, Hunter, was set up by his late father's will to marry his middle school bully, Hazel, just so that he; Hunter, could claim his inheritance.

“Since you’re back, are you going to pick the next book?” I blinked. “Me?” “Of course,” she said, smiling. “You’ve been gone. You deserve the honor.” Everyone nodded expectantly. I looked down at the stack of books on the table, my fingers brushing across their covers. My hand paused on a novel about love, identity and societal expectations. This book will give them a glimpse of what I passed through during my absence. I smiled softly. “How about this one?” Brent groaned. “Oh no, not another depressing tragedy. Can’t we read something with a hopeful romance?”

“There’s a bookstore that stays open late.” Emma turned toward him. “Now?” James shrugged. “Just briefly. I want to walk.” Emma nodded. “All right.” They parked along a quieter stretch of road. James lifted Ethan carefully, letting the small head rest against his shoulder. Inside the bookstore, the scent of paper and old wood greeted them. Soft white lights made the shelves feel like corridors of time. Emma wandered toward the section of notebooks and journals, her fingers brushing spines until she paused at one with a simple cover.

There were only a couple of other kids that chose to read over the computers. I browsed the bookshelf searching for a book to read, my step-father set fire to all my books in the wheel barrow when he first moved in with us. I picked a book up from the shelf, my father had bought me it before he died, I was surprised to see it in a school library. The Darkest Minds. Before I knew it, books started slipping out of my hand. One by one, the books fell down the steps and into the grass-covered ground below. And just when I squatted down to pick them up, I saw a pair of brown, expensive-looking leather shoes approach me. I looked up and was startled to see James. He bent down to help me pick up the books from the ground.
